When Summer Activities & Digestive Symptoms Don't Mix

Despite the rainy summer we’ve had, there still has been some sunny days perfect for being outdoors. But if you are someone with digestive woos, a multi-hour road trip or weekend of camping in the woods might seem more stressful than blissful.

What can you do?

Try to keep to your meal routine as much as possible.

It’s funny how habits form but if you are someone who falls into the ‘cottage' or 'weekend eating’ routine which is a complete 180 from your usual weekday routine no wonder your digestive system gets confused.

  • Can’t get your morning high-fibre cereal in? Improvise – you might be able to make overnight oats or try a packaged instant oatmeal to keep your morning fibre boost which can help you start the day off right

Plan ahead

You may not have a luxury kitchen in the woods, but a little planning ahead can go a long way.

  • Hard boil some eggs and take them in the cooler for an easy protein snack or breakfast

  • Store-bought salads like potato salad or coleslaw are easy but if the heavy mayo-y dressings don’t sit well for you it could be trouble. Before you leave for your summer adventure, an easy bean salad recipe with a vinaigrette dressing that you can prepare, pack in a mason jar and stash in the cooler could be a solution – plus more soluble fibre to keep your gut microbiota happy!

Manage stress

Sure, summer fun is supposed to be stress reducing but if you are the kind of person who finds you need a vacation from your vacation, remembering to try and manage your stress is going to be important for you and your digestion. Take some time while you are out with nature for some outdoor stretching or breathing activities or give yourself some time to relax and just look up at the stars without the radio playing or your cell phone in hand. Unplugging can help you unwind and cope with stress.

Sure it may be tempting to throw caution to the wind, abandon your routine and survive on hot dogs and s’mores by the campfire for all meals well you are on vacaction but you might be risking some unpleasant hours ahead - and no one wants that - especially when an outhouse is your only option!
